The Texas Longhorn is without question the mortar that built the American West. These ancient Spanish cattle were the bounty that drew the railroads across the Mississippi, the commissary that fueled Western expansion as early as the fifteenth century, and the symbol of the frontier independence that prevails still in the American spirit. The beauty and physical presence of North America?s original cattle not only stops a viewer mid-stride, but continues to instill pride in our glorious Western heritage.

In order to produce a book of extraordinary quality, Santa Rita Press has been established to publish, market and distribute what will be one of the most remarkable coffee-table books the publishing industry and Western Americana scholarship has ever seen.

The designer of the book, the printer and the bookbinder are indisputably the finest in their fields, and are all more excited about this project than anything they have done before. The book will be marketed to Texas Longhorn breeders, cattlemen in general, Western boutiques, interior decorators, nine thousand public library systems in the U.S., independent booksellers, the big chain bookstores and on the World Wide Web. Marketing and distribution will also encompass a number of foreign countries, and corporations to use as premiums and corporate gifts.

Included in the marketing effort is a coast-to-coast promotional tour with television appearances, newspaper, magazine and other media interviews with the author accompanied by a magnificent 2,500 pound trophy Texas Longhorn steer. An intense five-year marketing effort is planned, which will sell books and put the image and name of the Texas Longhorn in front of millions of people, while illuminating the mystique and reinforcing the pride in the heritage of the American West.

This spectacular project will have a first edition of fifteen thousand books, which is being underwritten primarily by corporate sponsors in three categories: Rio Grande at $50,000, Nueces at $25,000, and Pecos at $12,000, each limited to ten benefactors, and a fourth category, the Brazos at $4,000, limited to twenty-five and offered exclusively to commemorate ranches and ranching family names.

To my knowledge, this is the first piece of literature made possible by corporate and individual sponsorship, and as such may usher in a new and nurturing form of marketing that is respected and cherished by the consumer.

By securing sponsors to underwrite the cost of production, Santa Rita Press can offer marketing that is of the highest caliber, produce a showpiece of extraordinary American quality, and keep the selling price of the book down to around $60.00, where it will be affordable to anyone or can be given away freely as gifts, bringing the story and image of the Texas Longhorn to people and areas of influence untouched by the magnificence of this Western icon.
